Mid-term Examinations

The regulations governing mid-term examinations on the degree programmes in the Faculty of Education were approved on 19th December 2012.

Mid-term examinations on degree programmes should be seen as an exceptional assessment tool. They are a random test on one half or a third of a subject's content and are taken in ordinary class time, coinciding with subject teaching periods. If these types of tests are not properly scheduled, they hinder normal class sessions. It should be pointed out that one week is scheduled for this type of exam on the UIB academic calendar.

For this reason, holding these tests is deemed exceptional and subject to approval by the Board of Studies for the degree programme in question, in accordance with the following procedure:

If a subject requires mid-term exams, the course lecturer shall present a proposal and the examination date to the Board of Studies before the course guides are finalised (June of the previous academic year), which shall approve the date and notify course lecturers. It is understood that if no proposal is submitted to the board, no mid-term examination may be held.

Addition of Courses

  1. Only students who have enrolled within the ordinary deadline may extend their enrolment with subjects from the second semester
  2. The addition of courses plan must be submitted by the faculty or school and approved by the Academic Commission. The enrolment plan will be published before the ordinary enrolment deadline for new students.

The Faculty of Education has established the following addition of courses enrolment plan:

  1. Addition of courses enrolment applies to all second-semester subjects, except external placements and the final degree project, within the set deadline
  2. Enrolment for elective courses will only allowed where the relevant subjects have open spots.

Faculty of Education Regulations on Early Assessment Applications

1. With a view to ensure academic activities for subjects are planned correctly, students are recommended to request early assessment from the centre’s admin services before 4th October for the Final Degree Project (TFG) and before 15th October for all other subjects. Nonetheless, they may make their request within the deadlines stated in the Academic Regulations

2. Early assessment shall be done according to the syllabus and assessment elements from the last time the subject was taught. For Final Degree Projects, the previously assigned university tutor shall remain in place; where student enrol for the first time, a tutor will be assigned. The dean may refuse an early assessment request where the final assessment for a subject includes different elements and students fail any of them, or where no tutor can be found at the university

3. The submission calendar for assessed activities shall be proposed by the lecturer or tutor. The final tests and/or panels for the Final Degree Project in early assessment shall be held during the examination periods, on the dates set by the head of studies. The faculty may require the tests be taken before a panel comprising three lecturers assigned by the head of the corresponding department

4. Early assessment shall be granted by the head of studies according to the following conditions:

  • Early assessment may be requested for a maximum of two subjects per academic year (including the TFG and up to a maximum of 12 credits), as long as students are able to finish their programme in the supplementary assessment period in the first semester
  • Students must have completed at least one subject enrolment, except for the Final Degree Project or Master's Thesis, where this requirement does not apply
  • The course guide must include an assessment system with recoverable activities where this option is available. Otherwise, lecturers must approve the option.

5. Curricular placements on the degree programmes in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Social Education and Pedagogy are excluded from early assessment.

6. Students will be assessed in the relevant period in the first semester where their early assessment request is granted (including the TFG), in accordance with what is set out in the UIB Academic Regulations.
 

Application Deadlines in the Event of Examination Clashes

The periods governed by the Academic Regulations remain in place. The regulations state that the relevant calendar must be considered for each academic year.

Faculty of Education Regulations on How to Make Up for Activities on Undergraduate Programmes

In the event of justified circumstances, lecturers must have a procedure in place to avoid any negative impact on student marks where they are unable to complete an assessed activity. These include the following:

  • Medical reasons: upon presentation of a doctor's note from a private insurance company, social security or the UIB
  • Family death: death of a direct older or younger relative. Students will be required to submit proof
  • In both of the above instances, the circumstance must be on the activity date, thus making it impossible for student to do it
  • In other instances, the Board of Studies shall decide whether students have the right to make up for activities.

Final Degree Project Regulations

Faculty of Education Regulations on Academic Progress

On 21st December 2012, the Faculty of Education board ruled that students must pass a minimum of 30 credits in their first year and 60 in the first two years on the programme in order to continue their studies.

 

Faculty of Education Regulations on Group Changes

In accordance with article 15 in the Academic Regulations regarding group allocation, at its meeting on 19th June 2013 the Faculty of Education Board approved the condition that 3% of group places would be reserved for duly justified and documented group changes where students met the circumstances set out in said regulations.

Students who wish to change group need to submit a request via UIBdigital. The deadlines should be checked with admin services. 

The supporting documents for group changes due to scheduling clashes (employment contract, elite athlete, etc.) must be attached to the request. Requests shall only be processed where there are enough places and the clash can be justified in line with the causes stated in the Academic Regulations and is duly documented.

Requests that do not comply with the aforementioned requirements and lack the supporting documents shall not be accepted.

Group changes that do not follow the aforementioned procedure and have not been approved by the faculty board shall not be authorised.

Allocation of Spots in Different Groups for Each Subject

Once enrolment is complete, the faculty will organise the relevant spot allocations where this is deemed necessary for academic or administrative purposes.

Taking Another Speciality on the Primary Education Degree Programme

Graduates from the University of the Balearic Islands Primary Education programme may take another speciality. In order to do so, they need to fill in a general application form and follow the procedure below:

Where graduates wish to request more than one speciality, they must state this in the form by order of preference.

If there are more applications than available spots, the home centre and academic record mark shall be taken into account.

Important information: subjects for these specialities may only be taken in the second semester (February-June). In no way may early assessment be requested for these subjects.

The new speciality is not available at the Minorca, and Ibiza and Formentera campuses.

Additional information: admissions to the Educational Support speciality through recognition of a Master's Degree in Inclusive Education is subject to spots remaining available after admissions are finalised for undergraduate degree holders.

Electives

DEGREE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Students must take 12 credits of elective subjects.

These 12 credits must include the two English courses, which are required in order to be awarded a B2 level in English.

In turn, in order to be awarded the required Catalan level (C1) to work as a teacher in Early Childhood Education in the Balearics, students must take the elective subject 'Language Learning in Multilingual Contexts', alongside the following Catalan courses: Catalan Language and Teaching, Catalan Universal Literature for Nursery Education and Language Skills for Nursery Education.

Minimum Compensation Mark

At its meeting on 3rd November 2014, the Faculty of Education Board set a minimum threshold mark of 6.5 to qualify for a compensation mark.

Minimum Mark for Extraordinary Awards

The minimum mark to quality for extraordinary awards on Faculty of Education programmes is 8.5.

Specific Regulations on Extracurricular Placement Performance and Recognition

On 10th February 2021, the Faculty of Education Board approved faculty students could undertake extracurricular placements as long as they do not clash with the respective curricular placement periods on their degree programmes (Early Childhood, Primary Education, Social Education and Pedagogy), in order to avoid any scheduling conflicts.

In turn, the Board also approved on the same date that extracurricular placements could in no way be accredited as curricular placements on the degree programmes in Early Childhood, Primary Education, Social Education and Pedagogy, since extracurricular placements are paid and not tutored.
